CHAPTER FOUR
Mother smiled, taking the eggs from Lulu. She opened the carton, took out several, and cracked them in fine lines across their middles.
Lulu watched the yolks within the egg whites, yellow as suns glowing on snow, slide gracefully into the mixing bowl. âLet me know if you find any dinosaurs or tiny crowns,â she said.
âWhat are you talking about?â asked Mother.
âNothing.â Lulu held her chin in her hands, her elbows resting on the kitchen counter.
Mother added sugar to the bowl and said, âI hope your Great-aunty Hauty and Grandpère Hy enjoy my apple kugel.â
âI donât know that they enjoy anything,â said Lulu.
âUnfortunately, I must agree,â said Harry, who had appeared on the countertop behind the mixing bowl.
Mother said, âThatâs an unkind thing to say.â
Lulu watched the yolks and whites being twirled into a tempest. She didnât say anything.
âYes, unkind,â Mother said, beating at the eggs. Mother sometimes persisted in her thoughts, beating dead horses, so to speak. âMost unkind. They are, after all, gray-haired people set in their ways.â
âYes, Mother,â said Lulu. She and Harry rolled their eyes at each other.
âWell! At any rate,â said Mother. Whenever Mother said âWell!â with an exclamation point and âAt any rate,â it meant she was changing the subject. âYou used to have a monster under your bed, when you were a little girl. Do you remember?â Mother said.
âYes, I do,â said Lulu.
âWasnât that the very same monster that is under Master Samâs bed?â said Harry.
Lulu nodded.
âYou were very young then, Lulu. My goodness, I havenât thought of that in ages! You were just like Sam! You got rid of him, didnât you?â said Mother, referring to the monster.
âI thought so,â said Lulu.
âI had hoped so,â added Harry.
âHow?â asked Mother.
âI forget,â said Lulu, telling the truth.
âWell, donât worry. Perhaps it will all come back to you, and you can get rid of Samâs monster the same way,â said Mother.
âPerhaps,â said Lulu.
âPerhaps,â said Harry.
Neither Lulu nor Harry looked convinced.
âBut I still say itâs just a mouse!â said Mother, pouring flour. Some flour made it into the mixing bowl, but a good deal fell to the floor. Mother did a little soft-shoe in it and smiled.
âAt least she can still smile,â Lulu said to Harry as they left the kitchen to Mother and her baking. âShe doesnât have a monster under her bed!â
